Make sure it's snow that's not too wet (or else it'll be slushy), and not too dry (or else it won't stick). To gather snow together, forget all you've seen in cartoons about rolling a snowball into a giant ball. Pile the snow into a mount and then pack it. Pile then pack, pile then pack. Once it's at a sizable size...then start carving away!

If you're not afraid of arthritis, you can use your bare hands to smooth out the snow. The warmth from your hands will melt it a little and then refreeze, giving it a smooth glaze.
