A lot of times, they'll be frozen if you live in parts of the country where fresh fruit is a bit hard to come by. You'll want to pick ones that are still greenish, and definitely not brown already.
Take a knife and split it longitudinally, and you'll see pouches of yellow flesh on the inside. Wear gloves to prevent getting stabbed!
